Endorsements

2026 Candidates

The Steady State endorses candidates for Congress, Governor, and other national-security-relevant offices who show a consistent commitment to the rule of law regardless of party, support nonpartisan oversight of the Executive Branch, and understand the security challenges facing the country. Endorsed candidates must also uphold democratic norms — the peaceful transfer of power, rejection of political violence, and defense of civil liberties including a free press and the right to dissent. The Steady State does not endorse candidates who have worked to subvert democratic institutions, discredited the security community without evidence, or promoted disinformation or extremism.

Jimmy Panetta (CA-19)

Jimmy Panetta represents California’s 19th District, running for reelection. He began his legal career in 1996 as a prosecutor for the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office, later serving as a Deputy District Attorney in Monterey County prosecuting violent gang members. In 2003, he was commissioned as an Intelligence Officer with the U.S. Navy Reserve and deployed with a Special Operations task force to Afghanistan, earning the Bronze Star for meritorious service in a combat zone. In Congress, he serves on the House Committee on Ways and Means and the House Committee on Budget.

Salud Carbajal (CA - 24)

Salud Carbajal represents California’s 24th Congressional District and is running for reelection. He earned his bachelor’s degree from UC Santa Barbara and a master’s in organizational management from Fielding Graduate University, and served eight years in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, including active duty during the 1991 Gulf War. In 2004, he was elected to the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors, where he implemented a county Climate Action Plan and expanded solar energy access, before being elected to Congress. In Congress, he serves as a senior member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.

Gil Cisneros (CA-31)

Gil Cisneros is running to represent California’s 31st District again. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy after high school on an ROTC scholarship, earning his B.A. in Political Science from George Washington University, an MBA from Regis University, and an M.A. in Urban Education Policy from Brown University. He represented California’s 39th District in Congress in 2019, and in 2021, he was appointed Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness and the military’s Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer, where he led the Pentagon’s new reproductive healthcare policy for service members and reforms to military sexual assault and harassment guidelines.

George Whitesides (CA-27)

George Whitesides represents California’s 27th District and is running for reelection. He served as Chief of Staff for NASA during the Obama administration, where he led reform efforts that helped enable current U.S. space leadership and received the agency’s Distinguished Service. He then served as the first CEO of Virgin Galactic, growing the company into a global aerospace firm over a decade. He has also co-founded Megafire Action, the first organization dedicated to solving the nation’s megafire crisis, and co-chaired the Antelope Valley COVID-19 Task Force, for which he received NASA’s Exceptional Public Achievement Medal.

DEREK TRAN (CA-45)

Derek Tran represents California’s Forty-Fifth Congressional District and currently serves in the U.S. House of Representatives. Before being elected to Congress in 2024, he worked as an attorney and served as a small-business owner and community leader in Orange County. In Congress, Tran has focused on issues including national security, veterans, economic opportunity, healthcare, and protecting democratic institutions, bringing his background as a first-generation American and attorney to his work in the House.

Brad Sherman represents California’s 32nd Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives, where he has served since 1997. Ted Lieu represents California’s Thirty-Sixth Congressional District and is currently serving his sixth term in the U.S. House of Representatives. He served in the California State Assembly and State Senate before being elected to Congress in 2014, and is a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, retiring as a Colonel after service on active duty and in the Reserves.
